Wurdong BESS

A CG render of the Wurdong BESS
Akaysha is proposing to deploy a large-scale BESS near Wurdong Heights in the Gladstone Region in QLD, with a capacity of between 400MW/1600MWh. Akaysha is consulting with the community, completing environmental surveys for planning approval and proceeding with the connection process.

About the proposed plans

We have plans to build the new BESS at 89 Hughes Road, Wurdong Heights, adjacent to the existing substation.

The project will include:

  • Installation of battery units, inverters, cooling systems, and other equipment
  • Connection to local electrical grids
  • A 275 kV HV substation and transmission line connecting to Wurdong Substation

The BESS will support the state of Queensland’s network and a transition to clean energy.

Local benefits

Overall, around 150 supporting jobs will be created for throughout construction and operation, supporting the need for more local employment and the economy. We recognise the importance of supporting local businesses and we are committed to working with local trades, contractors, suppliers and service providers through construction and operations to increase opportunities for local workers.

The BESS will also provide additional storage capacity for the National Electricity Market and increase energy reliability for the local community.

Our aim is to help facilitate the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy grid by providing flexibility and storage capacity.

Development update

Akaysha Energy is progressing in the planning pathway to develop a 400MW/1600MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and associated infrastructure in Wurdong Heights.

A planning application is currently with Gladstone Regional Council for consideration.

The planning documents will be available to review during the Public Notification period from Wednesday, 17 July until Wednesday 7 August.
